ADHD in Adults

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can affect attention, organization, impulse control, and daily functioning. Symptoms begin in childhood, but some people are first diagnosed as adults.

How ADHD Can Affect Daily Life

Adults with ADHD may have difficulty staying focused, remembering commitments, managing time, or finishing tasks. Some experience restlessness or act impulsively. These difficulties can affect work, relationships, and responsibilities at home.

Understanding the Diagnosis

Occasional distraction does not necessarily mean ADHD. An evaluation considers whether symptoms are persistent, occur in more than one setting, and interfere with daily life.

The assessment includes childhood experiences, current symptoms, and psychiatric and medical history. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and substance use can cause similar difficulties or occur alongside ADHD.

Treatment and Support

Treatment may include medication, psychotherapy, and practical strategies for organization and time management. The approach is individualized, with follow-up visits to assess benefits, side effects, and changing needs.
